European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that the Omicron variant is expected to be the dominant variant in the European Union by mid-January.

Von der Leyen said that the 27-nation bloc is prepared to fight the variant with 66.6% of the European population fully inoculated against the virus. She stated that the EU is currently dealing with a double challenge, with a massive surge in cases recently due to the Delta variant, besides a spike in cases due to the Omicron variant. Several member states are already registering a record number of cases.
