Small study shows Omicron breaks through boosters

A small study from South Africa involving seven COVID-19 patients suggests that the Omicron variant of coronavirus can break through booster vaccine shots, reported a researcher involved in the study.

Seven German travellers who visited Cape Town, aged 25 to 39 years, were infected in late November or early December with Omicron variant. All of them had mild to moderate symptoms and none of them needed to be hospitalized. Six of them were fully vaccinated with the Pfizer-BioNTech jab. Among these, five had also received a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine while the sixth one had received a booster with the Moderna shot. The seventh one had received AstraZeneca vaccine initially, followed by second dose and the third booster dose of Pfizer jab.

The infections occurred between 1 and 2 months of receiving the booster doses. One of the study’s co-authors, Wolfgang Preiser, said that the study showed infection was possible and caused symptomatic illness despite receiving booster jab… (ET Healthworld – Reuters, December 17, 2021)
