If India witnesses UK-like COVID outbreak, there will be 14 lakh cases per day, cautions Dr. VK Paul

Amid the concerning surge in COVID-19 cases globally, with the emergence of the Omicron variant, NitiAayog member Dr. VK Paul has expressed grave concern. 

Emphasizing the spread of the virus in Europe, at a press conference, he compared it to India and stated that if a similar surge is seen in India, then considering the country’s population, there will be 14 lakh cases of COVID-19 daily. Dr. Paul also stressed that genome sequencing is not possible for every sample.

In India, around 113 cases of Omicron variant have been identified thus far in 11 states and union territories. A total of 26 cases out of these were confirmed on Friday. Joint Secretary of the Health Ministry, Lav Agarwal, stated that Omicron variant has been detected in 91 countries across the world… (HT, December 18, 2021)
