Kolkata reports two new cases: a 19-yr-old UK flyer and an 11-yr-old from Sweden

A 19-year-old UK flyer and 11-year-old Swedish flyer tested COVID Positive among the 227 passengers on Air India’s AI164 flight which landed at Kolkata Airport on Sunday. Genomic sequencing was done for both the samples and sent to NIBMG-Kalyani which confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant. These are the 5th and 6th Bengals ever tested for Omicron.  

According to airport officials, the 19-year-old Indian tested positive after undergoing rapid RT-PCR tests all three times. He was taken to a hospital in Daklia. All the passengers were requested to their health during the 7-day home quarantine, conduct an RT-PCR test on the 8th day.

In a previous case, a 69-year-old Kolkata resident who had returned from Nigeria tested COVID positive and his swab samples were stored at the School of Tropical Medicine and would be sent to NIBMG-Kalyani on Monday for genomic sequencing. The patient showed mild symptoms and his health parameters were normal.
