India's weekly COVID case count below 50,000 for first time in 19 months

With concerns growing around the Omicron variant and increasing number of COVID-19 cases globally, the numbers continue to drop in India. 

India registered less than 50,000 new infections in the week ending Sunday, which represents the first time in 19 months that the weekly case numbers have fallen below that mark. The country logged around 49,000 new cases in the week from December 13-19, representing a decline of 12.3% from the previous weeks figure of 55,824. The last time that the country recorded weekly cases below the 50,000 mark was in the week from May 25-31, last year. The figure then was 48,858.

Fatalities also declined to below 2,000 during the week for the first time since the week of October 11-17. Of the 1922 deaths reported during the week, 1242 were old deaths that were added to the figure, largely by Kerala… (Times of India – TNN, December 20, 2021)
