The district health officials reported that the government-run hospitals across Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad and the rural areas were equipped with 40 oxygen generation plants in total. Among the 40 oxygen generation plants, 25 was in Pune, 12 were in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and 3 were in the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation which together would generate around 36 metric tonnes of oxygen. 25 more such plants were being streamlined to be installed across the district soon, which will further increase the oxygen generation capacity to 65-plus metric tonnes.

A PMC official stated that 12 medical oxygen generation plants were already installed across the civic hospitals and 6 more were proposed. The remaining ones would also be installed and made functional soon.

The chairman of the Indian Medical Association’s Hospital Board of India, Pune chapter, Sanjay Patil said that during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic there were many problems due to scarcity of oxygen. Early production and availability of more oxygen were better as a lot of patients from rural areas came to Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad for treatment. Even few private hospitals had installed such oxygen generation plants after the second wave.
