Omicron Variant Surges to 73% of All US COVID-19 Cases

As per latest estimates, the Omicron variant now constitutes 73% of all sequenced COVID-19 cases in the United States, increasing from around 3% last week.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that the variant has been detected across the country. The Delta variant, which was the dominant variant in the US until last week, now accounts for around 27% of the sequenced cases. The considerable rise in the prevalence of cases due to Omicron raises concern that the rapidly spreading variant could result in a wave that will overwhelm the healthcare system. 

The CDC stated that the surge in cases follows a similar pattern as seen globally. In some areas, the Omicron variant accounts for almost all new cases, for instance, it accounted for around 92% of cases in New York and New Jersey, and 96% of the cases in Washington state… (NDTV – Bloomberg, December 21, 2021)
