Amid rise in Omicron cases, health officials in New York have reported a surge in hospitalized children.

The New York State Department of Health cautioned that there has been an upward trend in hospitalizations among children related to COVID-19. In New York City, there has been four-fold increase in COVID-19 hospital admissions for children aged 18 years and below beginning the week of December 5 through the present week, a statement said on Friday. Nearly half of the hospital admissions are in children below 5 years of age, an age group that is not yet eligible for vaccination, said the department.
