The United States broke the global record of daily COVID-19 cases with at least 1.13 million cases recorded on Monday, as per a Reuters report, as the highly contagious Omicron variant surged across the country. 

The previous record was 1.03 million daily new cases, reported on January 3. Despite being reported as a less severe variant of coronavirus, Omicron has driven hospital admissions to a record high in the United States. The number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 increased two-fold in three weeks, reported Reuters. The figures crossed the record of 132,051 hospitalizations set in January 2021.

The healthcare systems are overwhelmed and elective surgeries have been suspended in several hospitals in the country due to a surge in COVID hospitalizations and staff shortages.
