A doctor must inform the patient and his/her family about the risks of not undergoing treatment.

The principles of consent have been described in a Supreme Court judgement ‘Samira Kohli vs Dr. Prabha Manchanda and Anr, SCI, Civil Appeal No. 1949 of 2004, 16.01.2008’. Elaborating on the nature of adequate information to be provided in the informed consent, the Court said that the treating doctor should also inform the patient about the “adverse consequences of refusing treatment”.
