Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a global public health issue with survival outcomes less than 10%. The present state of OHCA management is dismal in India. There is a need for a multipronged approach in improving survival outcomes from OHCA in India.

Following measures are needed:

  • Creation of a National OHCA Registry as a part of an ongoing disease surveillance program
  • Increase awareness on sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Enhancing bystander CPR. Deployment of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) as part of a public access defibrillation (PAD) system.
  • Establishing an efficient emergency medical service (EMS) system. Providing access to affordable and accessible evidence-based post-cardiac care.
