Almost all teenagers admitted to the intensive care units (ICU) due to COVID-19 were not vaccinated against the disease, suggests a new study conducted by the CDC and 31 pediatric hospitals in 23 states.

The investigators stated that two doses of COVID-19 vaccine had high efficacy against hospitalizations and ICU admission or the need for life support intervention. The Pfizer vaccine prevented 94% of hospitalizations and was found to be 98% effective in preventing ICU admissions. Investigators assessed the data for 1,222 patients aged 12-18 years, hospitalized from June 1 to October 25, 2021. Overall, 445 adolescents hospitalized for COVID-19 and 777 hospitalized for other reasons (controls) were included. Around 40% of patients who tested positive were admitted to the ICU, and all of them, except for two patients, were unvaccinated. All patients, except for one, who needed life support, such as a ventilator, were not vaccinated. The findings are published in the New England Journal of Medicine… (Medscape)
