According to a new study, yet to be peer-reviewed, there appears to be an inverse relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and incidence of diabetes.

The retrospective, observational, cohort study included 8722 consecutive individuals with no diagnosis of diabetes. The participants were assessed with clinically indicated exercise treadmill stress testing from April 2001 to December 2016. The stress test results were converted into metabolic equivalents of task (METs) to determine cardiorespiratory fitness.

A multivariate Cox regression model, adjusting for potential confounders, revealed that there was a significant 10% reduction in the risk of incident diabetes with every incremental unit rise in baseline METs. The inverse relationship between increased cardiorespiratory fitness and reduced incidence of diabetes was independent of any other traditional diabetes risk factors… (Medscape)
