Global Burden of Skin Disease: Inequities and Innovations

A study investigated the current understanding of the burden of dermatological disease through insights by the Global Burden of Disease project, evaluated the impact of skin disease on quality of life in a global context, explored socioeconomic implications, and discussed interventions for improving the quality of dermatologic care in resource-poor settings and found-

  • Skin diseases stand as the 4th leading cause of nonfatal disease burden globally as shown by The Global Burden of Disease project. Yet, research efforts and funding do not correspond to the relative disability of skin diseases.
  • International and national efforts, such as the WHO List of Essential Medicines, are important for reducing the socioeconomic burden of skin diseases and increasing access to care.
  • Advances like teledermatology, point-of-care diagnostic tools, and task-shifting aids to dermatological care in under-served regions in a cost-effective manner.

Thus Skin diseases lead to a marked non-fatal disability globally, particularly in resource-poor regions. More studies on the burden of skin disease in low resource settings and strategies to deliver high-quality care are critical to improving the burden of skin diseases.
