Regulation 7.17 of the MCI Code of Ethics 2002 suggests that a registered medical practitioner cannot publish photographs or case reports of his/her patients without taking their permission, in any journal in a way that the identity of the patient could be made out. Consent is, however, not required if the identity is not disclosed.

The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors also requires informed consent for publication if identifiable information is used. The Journal of Medical Case Reports also requires informed consent before publication.
