Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes flu-like respiratory infection involving multiple organ systems like the gastrointestinal system, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, skin and mucosa.

A study investigated the literature for identifying the specific manifestations of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the oral mucosa by exploring PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and Medline.

Thirty-nine articles considering 59 laboratory-confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection with oral mucosa findings were included and the following observations were made:

  • 43.9% of the patients reported Kawasaki-like syndrome.
  • 36.3% of the patients reported oral ulcers including aphthous, hemorrhagic and necrotic ulcers.
  • Pustules, macules, bullae, maculopapular enanthema, and erythema multiforme-like lesions were also reported.
  • 60.6% of patients had concomitant skin lesions.
  • 86.2% of patients had fever.
  • 76.1% of the patients were hospitalized.
  • 30.8% of the patients reported loss of taste and smell.

Thus, the knowledge about dermatologic manifestations of COVID-19 will enhance and facilitate patient management and referrals.
