The BA.2 subvariant of the Omicron variant of coronavirus, currently dominant in Denmark, seems to be more contagious than the BA.1 sub-lineage, stated Danish Health Minister Magnus Heunicke.

Heunicke said, “There is no evidence that the BA.2 variant causes more disease, but it must be more contagious.” While BA.1 lineage is accountable for around 98% of all cases of COVID-19 worldwide, in Denmark BA.2 became the dominant strain in the second week of January. Preliminary assessments indicate that BA.2 could be 1.5-fold more infectious than BA.1, said Denmark’s top infectious disease authority, Statens Serum Institut (SSI).
