Pregnancy can lead to complications in women with heart disease and these complications can be life-threatening.
CVD is the leading cause of pregnancy-related mortality in the US and developing countries increasing from 7.2 to 17.2 deaths per 1,00,000 live births from 1987 to 2020.
CVD complicates 1-4% of pregnancies with higher prevalence in those with hypertensive disorders.
Maternal mortality is high in women with acquired heart disease that presents during pregnancy such as ACS, aortic dissection, diabetes mellitus, older pregnant population, sedentary behavior.
Gestation-based approach to breathlessness has to be differentiated from respiratory cause and cardiac causes.
Advanced maternal age, pre-existing comorbid conditions, congenital heart disease have increased mortality rates. Dilated cardiomyopathy is an important complication in 1-4% of the population.
Preconception counseling, multidisciplinary cardio-obstetrics team are warranted.
Patients should undergo ECG, Echo, fetal echo monitoring before the term due date.
