According to a new, randomized crossover study, people who consumed specifically developed snacks rich in some ingredients, including fiber, phytosterols, and antioxidants, had reduction in their LDL cholesterol, even when there were no other dietary or lifestyle changes.

A total of 54 adults were randomized to receive either the specially formulated snacks or control snacks that were similar in calories and packaging. The participants were told to consume the snacks twice a day as a substitute for something that they were already taking and to make no other changes in diet or lifestyle. No participant was receiving statin therapy either before or during the study period. The initial 4 weeks were followed by a 4-week washout period, and then the control group crossed over to receive the specially formulated snacks, while the intervention group was given the control snacks. LDL cholesterol levels were found to decline by nearly 9% and total cholesterol (TC) dropped by 5% in those receiving the specially formulated snacks compared to those receiving control foods. The findings are published in The Journal of Nutrition… (Medscape)
