The commonest pregnancy-related liver disorder is intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (IHCP). It is characterized by troublesome itching and can cause complications for both mother and fetus.

An analytical observational case-control study assessed the risk factors associated with IHCP and maternal and fetal outcomes in pregnancy associated with IHCP in the north Indian population.

44 subjects with IHCP and 44 normal healthy pregnant controls were enrolled in the study. They were evaluated for demographic parameters, obstetric history, and liver function tests including Bile acids. Various parameters relating to delivery and maternal and fetal complications were evaluated.

The following observations were made-

  • Matching of Study groups was done for age (0.52).
  • IHCP had more frequency of primipara.
  • IHCP subjects had elevated levels of Serum bilirubin, liver enzymes and Bile acids than controls.
  • IHCP was associated with a higher frequency of preterm birth. IHCP subjects showed greater fetal complications and birth weight.

Thus IHCP is associated with a higher risk of complications in infants than mothers.
