Liver disease is frequently encountered during pregnancy and may require specialized intervention. Determining the effects of changes in liver physiology in developing into the liver disease will ensure early diagnosis.

Liver disease during pregnancy must be intervened by a hepatologist for adequate management of mother-fetus health outcomes. Liver diseases are present in about 3% of all pregnancies in developed countries and are classified as-

  • Related to pregnancy
  • Non- related that are present de novo or are preexisting chronic liver diseases.

A review described the presentations of liver diseases associated with pregnancy and also a few frequent pre-existing and co-incidental in pregnancy.

Data were collected from the literature review and the National Institute of Perinatology in Mexico City over a period of three years and the following observations were made-

  • Tertiary referral women hospital reported the presence of liver disease in 11.24 % of all pregnancies.
  • 8% of all pregnancies had associated liver disease, primarily those related to preeclampsia (9.9% of pregnancies).
  • Only 0.56% was due to co-incidental or preexisting liver disease; with acute or chronic hepatitis C virus being the commonest (0.12%).

Thus while managing pregnancy in referral hospitals, it is important to rule out liver alterations early for adequate follow up of the disease and to prevent mother and child-related adverse consequences.
