Many hospitals in Delhi are hoping to resume normal medical services as the beds occupied by Covid-infected patients had decreased.

The Delhi government-run Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital stated that in January it had only 15 Covid patient admissions despite the city registering a high number of cases. A senior hospital official said most of the patients had recovered and none had to stay in hospital for more than seven days and many beds lay empty. They had slowly started the routine and elective medical services and resumed services to other patients.

Dr Suresh Kumar, medical director, Lok Nayak said that there were enough beds in the main building for COVID patients. Few services such as OPD, Gyne department, and important surgeries had already started working and other elective surgeries would resume soon. Currently, 70 patients were there in Lok Nayak Hospital.

1300 Covid patients were admitted to different private and public hospitals presently. There are 11 state-run facilities for Covid-19 patients, including the newly opened Indira Gandhi, Burari, GTB, Lok Nayak, Ambedkar Nagar, RGSSH, Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Deep Chand Bandhu, Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar, Janakpuri Super Specialty and Sanjay Gandhi Memorial hospitals. Earlier, when the third wave peaked, the Delhi government had issued an order to reserve at least 40% of beds for Covid-19 patients in all private hospitals and nursing homes.

An official from Deep Chand Bandhu Hospital said critical and emergency cases were being taken care of along with COVID services. Many people came for different treatment, but as they tested positive during the RT-PCR test so the beds are occupied mostly by them, currently they had 20 patients. But, the problem was that there were inadequate healthcare workers for providing services as many got infected last month and there was a shortage of staff to look after patients.
