A multicenter retrospective study determined the demographics, clinical presentation, and maternal and neonatal outcomes in patients diagnosed with acute fatty liver of pregnancy over 10 years.

The following observations were made-

  • 16 cases of acute fatty liver of pregnancy were included in the study.
  • 11 cases were diagnosed in the antepartum period, while 5 cases were diagnosed within 4 days after delivery.
  • 18% among which had multiple gestations.
  • The most frequent symptoms were Nausea and vomiting (75%).
  • 5% maternal deaths and 15% fetal deaths were reported.

Thus the patients with persistent nausea, vomiting, or epigastric pain in the third trimester should receive an evaluation of liver enzymes, renal function, and a complete blood count to rule out the diagnosis of acute fatty liver of pregnancy.
