On Monday, the West Bengal Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) asked Fortis Hospital to refund Rs 2 lakh to Dalia Goswami, who had gone to the hospital for Covid treatment.

The 52-year-old was treated for 29 days between May and June in 2021 and charged a bill of Rs 29,64,000 for treatment. WBCERC chairman justice (retd), Ashim Kumar Banerjee said that after analyzing the bill, they found that the patient was charged around Rs 3.3 lakh more. So, Commission imposed a penalty of Rs 50,000 on the hospital, which would be given to the patient as a penalty amount.

The hospital issued a statement stating that Fortis Healthcare ensured to follow the directions of the commission in all circumstances and the billing for this case was done as per TPA norms. The commission had advised them to bring these cases under the prescribed directive and they were committed to follow the commission′s advisory.
