Global COVID-19 cases dropped 17% over last week

According to the World Health Organization, global COVID-19 case count dropped 17% over the last week in comparison with the previous week, with a 50% decline seen in the United States. Fatalities due to COVID-19 dropped by 7% worldwide.

The weekly epidemiological report from the WHO suggests that the Omicron variant is becoming increasingly dominant, accounting for around 97% of all cases observed by the GISAID. A little more than 3% of the cases were due to the Delta variant.

The WHO logged over 19 million new coronavirus infections and under 68,000 new fatalities during the week from January 31 to February 6. However, experts indicate that the figures underestimate the actual toll.
