Acne Fulminans in a Young Girl - A Rare Case

Acne fulminans (AF) is an unusual and the utmost severe inflammatory form of acne, largely upsetting youngsters with a previous history of acne vulgaris.

No direct cause of AF has been determined sofar, despite of numerous activating agents. Owing to systemic signs, the patient may sometimes need an antagonistic inpatient treatment to avoid any systemic complications, and grossly morbid scarring as a result of the disease. We are presenting an exceptional case of AF in a 17-year-old girl treated with tropical agent with excellent response.

A 17-year-old girl, came with complaints of numerous red raised lesions over both cheeks and forehead past 2 months period with recent exacerbation in the form of large nodulocystic lesions along with a fever of 5 days duration. She had a history of the appearance of multiple painful red raised as well as few pus-filled lesions over both cheeks and forehead for the last 2 months.

There was no history of taking iodine-containing native treatments or any similar episodes in the past or any similar complaints in her family members.

Topical therapy was administered in the form of normal saline compresses and topical ointment isotretinoin applications thrice daily. She responded well to the treatment with significant improvement of the existing lesions with no occurrence of fresh lesions.

Early diagnosis of AF and appropriate therapeutic intervention are essential for effective disease control to avoid deforming residual scars and to minimize the risk of recurrence.
