Background

Methods

  • The study included 3,584 adults with mean age 48.1 years, who did not have adulthood asthma and other lung diseases, with normal lung function at baseline visit.
  • The categorization was done as those with remitted childhood asthma (n = 121) and healthy controls (n = 3,463) depending on their self-reported childhood asthma history.
  • Spirometry was done at baseline and follow-up visits.

Results

Conclusions

History of clinically remitted childhood asthma independently predicts accelerated decline in lung function in adults. Additionally, remitted childhood asthma and smoking may further quicken the development of obstructive lung disease.
