A study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, suggests that people with COVID-19 have an increased risk for cardiovascular complications for at least one year after they recover.

Investigators used data from the US Department of Veterans Affairs national health care databases and followed more than 153,000 veterans with a history of COVID-19 infection for up to one year after recovery. In comparison with people who were never infected, those who had a COVID-19 infection had higher odds of experiencing symptoms such as inflammatory heart disease, heart failure, dysrhythmia, heart attacks, strokes and clotting over the long term. People with previous COVID-19 infection had over 60% higher likelihood of developing any cardiac issue. Additionally, the risk was seen even in those who had very mild disease or did not require hospitalization.
