FDA limits use of GlaxoSmithKline-Vir COVID-19 antibody drug

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has stated that the COVID-19 antibody treatment from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK.L) and Vir Biotech (VIR.O) should not be used in places with circulation of coronavirus variants which are not susceptible to the drug.

Vir stated that sotrovimab retains neutralizing activity against the BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron coronavirus variant. However, recent research suggests that the variant was resistant to almost all of the monoclonal antibodies studied, including sotrovimab. The GSK-Vir antibody treatment is among the few COVID-19 treatments which were reported to work against the original Omicron variant.
