COVID-related diabetes may be short-lived

According to a study published in the Journal of Diabetes and Its Complications, patients with severe COVID-19 who develop diabetes while being hospitalized may have a temporary form of the disease. The blood sugar levels of these patients may return to normal afterward, suggests the study.

Investigators assessed 594 patients who developed signs of diabetes while being hospitalized for COVID-19, including 78 patients with no prior diagnosis of diabetes. In comparison with the patients with pre-existing diabetes, several among the newly diagnosed patients had less severe blood sugar issues, but more serious COVID-19 illness. 

About a year after hospital discharge, 40% of the newly diagnosed patients had blood sugar levels below the cutoff for diabetes, noted researchers. Study coauthor, Dr. Sara Cromer, of the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, stated that the findings indicate that newly diagnosed diabetes may represent a transitory condition associated with the acute stress of COVID-19… (Reuters, February 26, 2022)
