Long COVID May be Associated with Nerve Damage: Study

A new study suggests that some patients with long COVID may have long-term nerve damage that could result in fatigue, sensory changes, and pain in hands and feet.

The study, published in the journal Neurology: Neuroimmunology & Neuroinflammation, evaluated data from 17 patients who survived COVID-19 and had persistent symptoms, with no history or risks of neuropathy, or nerve damage or disease. All the patients, except one, had mild infections.

Around 59% of the patients (10 patients) had at least one test confirming neuropathy. Two patients had rare neuropathies which affected muscle nerves, and 10 developed small-fiber neuropathy. Common symptoms among the patients were fatigue, changes in senses, weakness, and pain in their hands and feet. In all, 11 patients received immunotherapies, including corticosteroids or intravenous immunoglobulins, and the five patients who were given repeated immunoglobulin G treatments were noted to obtain benefit.
