FDA Approves First Drug-Eluting Contact Lens

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval for a drug-eluting contact lens containing an antihistamine for individuals having allergic eye itch, revealed Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.

The disposable etafilcon A contact lens with ketotifen is the world′s first drug-eluting contact lens, and was recently approved in Japan and Canada too. Brian Pall, director of clinical science at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, said that these contact lenses relieve allergic eye itch for up to 12 hours, with no need for allergy drops, and also provide vision correction.

The lens is indicated for the prevention of ocular itch from allergic conjunctivitis while correcting refractive error (myopia or hyperopia) in aphakic as well as phakic patients… (Medpage Today)
