Pregnant Women on SSRIs Can Still Have Persistent Anxiety and Depression

Despite being treated with antidepressant medication, a considerable number of women still experienced symptoms of anxiety and depression during pregnancy, suggests a prospective study published in Psychiatric Research and Clinical Practice.

This prospective, longitudinal cohort study evaluated monthly patterns of anxiety and depression during pregnancy. Of 88 women who took selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), nearly one-third reported having clinically relevant symptoms of depression during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Nearly 40% of pregnant women who took SSRIs also experienced higher levels of anxiety, and a considerable proportion of the participants reported increasing symptoms all through the pregnancy.
