New gene differences detected in patients with severe COVID

Scientists have identified 16 new genetic variants in individuals who developed severe COVID-19. The study published in the journal Nature suggests that people with severe COVID-19 have certain genes that make them more vulnerable to failure to restrict the virus’ ability to replicate, or excessive inflammation and blood clotting.

The researchers conducted a genetic analysis of around 56,000 samples obtained from people in Britain and noted differences in 23 genes among COVID-19 patients who became critically ill, in comparison with the DNA of other people included in the study. This included 16 differences that had not been identified before. Changes were detected in vital genes involved in the regulation of factor VIII level, a protein involved in clot formation… (Reuters, March 7, 2022)
