Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi would soon start an in vitro fertilization (IVF) facility in the next 15 days, for the benefit of those who cannot bear high costs at private hospitals. The project was to start soon, after the recommendations by the parliamentary committee had in 2018, but was delayed due to the pandemic.

AIIMS and Lok Nayak Hospital, already have the IVF facility in Delhi. Private hospitals charge a huge amount compared to Rs 60,000 which is a one-time payment that includes all services at AIIMS. The new facility would reduce the burden on the two government IVF centres.

Dr Neena Malhotra, professor of, department of obstetrics and gynecology, said that before the pandemic started around 70-80 IVF cycles and about 18-20 frozen embryo cycles per month were being performed. Services were greatly hampered in the first, second and third waves. Currently, around 35-40 cycles per month were being conducted and a long waiting list was in hand.
