India reports the lowest weekly Covid deaths since mid-April 2020

India reported the lowest weekly death count due to Covid since the week from April 13-19 in 2020, as the numbers fell below 250 in the week ending Sunday. This is the lowest toll since the pandemic started two years ago.

There was a sharp decline in deaths as they decreased by 61%, with 243 fatalities in the current week as compared to 626 fatalities in the previous week. These do not include the deaths from earlier months added to the total fatality count during the period. Twenty deaths were reported on Saturday, which was the lowest since April 6, 2020. In 24 states out of 36, no fatality was reported on Saturday. Twenty one deaths were reported on Sunday till late at night.

Fresh weekly cases reported in the country stood at less than 26,400, which was also the lowest since May 4-12, 2020, with an average of 3,800 new cases per dayin the week ending March 13. On Sunday, India had reported 2,672 fresh cases which was the lowest since May 5, 2020. The weekly cases decreased by 39%. The active cases on Sunday night were nearly 37,000, which was also the lowest since May 6, 2020. (ET Healthworld, March 14, 2022)
