Results from a pre-specified pooled analysis of the DAPA-CKD and DAPA-HF trials have shown that dapagliflozin reduces the risk of new-onset diabetes mellitus. Data from a Scandinavian registry has indicated that the SGLT2 inhibitor class “may lower the risk of serious renal events in routine clinical practice.”

Besides, these agents can reduce the risk of development or worsen albuminuria, which is a marker of renal damage, through several pathways. The blood pressure-lowering effect is also maintained in people with CKD and could further contribute to a reduced renal burden, along with potentially offering synergistic effects with antihypertensive therapies in these patients.
