Skin ageing is a physiological condition that causes structural and functional changes in the skin. Common signs of ageing include the gradual decrease of hyaluronic acid (HA) in the skin and the appearance of wrinkles. Thus, effective HA supplementation could counteract HA deficiency and improve skin parameters, providing a safe profile for use that can be readily incorporated into a daily routine.

A recent study evaluated a food supplement containing a wide range of hyaluronans of different molecular weights (full-spectrum hyaluronan [FS-HA]) to ameliorate skin conditions in adult females.

Sixty subjects with mild-to-moderate skin ageing signs were enrolled for this clinical trial to receive 200 mg/day of FS-HA, or placebo, for 28 days. They underwent evaluation for the dermatological parameters at T0d and T28d; and were also evaluated for Product efficacy and tolerance using a self-assessment questionnaire. Additionally, HA serum levels were weekly evaluated in a proportion of enrolled subjects.

The results were as follows-

  • A marked improvement in all evaluated dermatological parameters related to skin ageing was observed in subjects of the active arm after 28 days.
  • More hydration (+10.6%) and protection from dehydration, with a decrease in both wrinkle depth (-18.8%) and volume (-17.6%) and an increase in elasticity and firmness (+5.1%) were observed in the skin.
  • Validation of Instrumental results was done by self-assessment questionnaire outcomes.

Thus administration of a food supplement based on innovative hyaluronans from bio-fermentation, characterized by a wide range of molecular weights, causes a quick and noteworthy reduction in the typical signs of skin ageing.
