Doctors at SLG Hospitals in Hyderabad saved a 16-year-old girl who attempted suicide by consuming hand sanitizer.

The hand sanitizer was found to contain methanol, revealed the doctors. The consumption of sanitizer led to swelling in the girl’s brain.

The incident occurred in Maharashtra and the patient was taken to Hyderabad as she slipped into a coma. Doctors at SLG Hospitals noted that she had severe acid pile-up. She underwent hemodialysis twice in order to remove the acid load, before she gradually recovered.

Consultant Neurologist at SLG Hospitals, Dr Abhinay Huchche, said that methanol is a dangerous substance and the FDA prohibits its use in hand sanitizers.
