According to a study published online in Arthritis and Rheumatology, Juvenile fibromyalgia (JFM) was linked to decreased volume in one of the regions of the brain and characterized by chronic widespread musculoskeletal pain-causing exhaustion, sleep difficulties, and mood swings.

The study included grey matter volume (GMV) changes in JFM patients and evaluated their functional and clinical relevance. A total of 34 girls with JFM and 38 healthy teenagers were enrolled in the study. All of the participants got a structural MRI of their brains and were given a series of questions to determine the difficulty faced by them to carry out daily activities.

When compared to controls, JFM patients revealed GMV reductions in the anterior-midcingulate cortex (MCC) region linked with pain. A larger GMV in inferior frontal regions was observed within the JFM group who complained of higher functional disability.Affective, self-referential, and language-related processing have all been connected to frontal brain areas. It was also observed that GMV reductions in JFM had some overlap with findings in adult fibromyalgia, particularly in the anterior/posterior cingulate cortices.

The partial overlap between juvenile and adult fibromyalgia emphasizes the need for early symptom recognition and take necessary medications and recommendations to prevent the condition from progressing to adult manifestations.
