Observations from new analyses from the SCORED trial revealed that investigational SGLT1&2 inhibitor Sotagliflozin was significantly effective in lowering severe cardiovascular adverse events in patients with type 2 diabetes, chronic renal disease, and cardiovascular disease at high risk.

The prespecified, secondary analyses of the SCORED results of 5,144 randomized patients with a history of cardiovascular disease who entered the trial with a history of cardiovascular disease, showeda significant 21 percent risk reduction in the combined incidences of total major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including cardiovascular death, first and recurrent episodes of nonfatal MI, and nonfatal stroke (CVD). In addition, a substantial 26 percent relative risk decrease in total MACE occurrences was seen among the 5,440 individuals without a CVD history.

Sotagliflozin reduced the risk of MI by a significant 31 percent in individuals with a history of CVD and by a relative 34 percent in those without a CVD history when compared to placebo. In addition, total nonfatal strokes were reduced by 31% in individuals with a CVD history and by 38% in those without a CVD history when compared to placebo.

The benefits of Sotagliflozin were impressive, but additional evidence is needed. The trial concluded that Sotagliflozin reduced MACE significantly within a few months of treatment initiation, reduced the rate of stroke and hemoglobin A1c levels in patients with type 2 diabetes even when their estimated glomerular filtration rate was less than 30 mL/min per 1.73 m2, which was unique in comparison to any other SGLT2 inhibitor, and finally demonstrated safety and efficacy in patients hospitalized for heart failure.
