Some perioperative specialists recommend that wait times for elective surgery after asymptomatic COVID-19 infection should be shortened, in sync with the current state of the pandemic.

The American Society of Anaesthesiologists and the Anaesthesia Patient Safety Foundation currently recommend that elective surgeries should be delayed for at least 7 weeks after a COVID-19 diagnosis in unvaccinated patients. In a letter to the British Journal of Anaesthesia, the specialists said that the data being used for these recommendations are from earlier in the pandemic and since current variants of the virus cause less severe disease, they should be revised to a shorter time duration.
