The city government on Monday reported the first Covid deaths in Shanghai since the start of the recent lockdown, which included three elderly people with underlying conditions.

The people who scrubbed to death included two women aged 89 and 91, and a 91-year-old man, who had underlying health complaints such as coronary heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure.

According to the city health commission, the eastern commercial hub had 22,248 new domestic cases on Monday, 2,417 of which were symptomatic. China has been recently battling to manage Covid outbreaks in several areas, owing to the fast-spreading Omicron strain. The country′s last new Covid deaths occurred on March 19, when two people died in the northeastern province of Jilin, the first in almost a year. (NDTV, April 18, 2022)
