The probiotic supplement Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG prescribe to high-risk infants in the first 6 months is not effective in lessening the risks of developing eczema, asthma, and rhinitis in later childhood. The researcher, Michael Cabana, Children’s hospital, New York stated that they cannot support its administration to children at high risk of allergic disease. Jonathan Spergel, chief of the allergy program at Children’s Hospital Philadelphia who was not part of the study added that the study adds to the literature that the prevention of allergy needs to be a multifactorial approach and not a simple prescription of the probiotic.

The randomized, double-masked, parallel-arm, and controlled trial was designed to study whether the daily administration of LGG in the first 6 months to children at high risk for allergic disease because of asthma in parents could decrease their cumulative effects in developing eczema. However, no such results were seen.

Eczema was diagnosed in 78 subjects, asthma in 32, and rhinitis in 15 though incidences of eczema were high in infancy in comparison to incidences of asthma and rhinitis which were constant throughout. The researchers also linked the outcome with the mode of delivery and the duration of breastfeeding to the child and it was found that cesarean delivery was linked to a higher incidence rate of developing rhinitis with a hazard ratio of 3.33.
