New research found that virtual reality significantly reduces agoraphobia in patients with psychosis. VR therapy is an interactive 3D computer-generated environmental procedure that provides the sensation of the real world. This virtual environment allows the patient to deal with anxiety, feeling of uncomfortableness, or to learn to reengage in everyday life.

The study included 346 patients diagnosed with schizophrenia or a related disorder receiving treatment for psychosis. The subjects were randomly assigned to VR group, VR group plus usual care, and usual care alone. The VR session took place in 6 sessions. As soon as the subject entered the room, two life coaches were present to walk them across the situation including a mental health worker to help them.

The VR graphics were set in five different scenarios such as a café, a pub, a bus, their doors opening into a street, or a small local shop. Each set has five levels of difficulties and the subjects can work through them in progression. The results of the study were published in The Lancet Psychiatry.
