A study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal revealed that most women and obese persons were particularly at greater risk of long Covid. More than two-thirds of those hospitalized with Covid-19 still have symptoms a year later, according to the researchers. Only 26 per cent of the 2,300 individuals who had been hospitalized with Covid-19 reported a full recovery after five months and only 28.9 per cent after a year. Women had a 33 per cent lower rate of full recovery.

Patients who were obese and who needed mechanical ventilation while in the hospital were at higher risk of long Covid. Breathlessness, weariness, muscle soreness, sleep issues, limb weakness, and mental health impairment were the most common symptoms being observed among people suffering from long Covid.

There was a pressing need to investigate the situation since a growing number of people were still suffering from long-term Covid symptoms, which limited their ability to exercise and lowered their overall health-related quality of life. (Hindustan Times, 24 April, 2022)
