World Health Organisation is expected to release its global Covid 19 death tool report on May 5th informed Jon Wakefield, a member of the modeling team. As per New York Times report, WHO claims that India’s Covid death toll is around four million, eight times the nation’s official figure.

In a detailed response to an NYT article published on April 16, ‘India is stalling WHO′s efforts to make global Covid death toll public’ the health minister argued that the mathematical model cannot be used to calculate the numbers in a geographically large country like India with a much bigger population and other countries with much smaller populations. The ministry noted that the model gives two highly different sets of excess mortality between the developed and third world countries. According to the health ministry, India, along with countries like China, Bangladesh, Iran, and Syria has raised questions regarding the methodology and use of unofficial sets of data.

Dr. Wakefield stated that the ministry’s statement on the excess mortality numbers was inaccurate, and he tweeted the link to the research paper that gives the detailed methodology used by the WHO.
