Asthma in children worsens after COVID; a booster dose ineffective against Omicron after infection

According to the study reported in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice asthma in children may worsen after infection with the coronavirus.

Among 62,000 asthmatic children in the United States, 7,700 tested positive for the virus and had more asthma visits, hospitalizations, emergency inhaler use, and steroid treatments in the six months following their illness than children who tested negative and had better control in the six months following their illness.

In another report posted on medRxiv ahead of peer review, it was revealed that taking the third dosage of an mRNA vaccine from Pfizer, BioNTech, or Moderna may not improve protection against the Omicron version of the virus in persons who had previously been infected with the coronavirus. From November 2021 to January 2022, approximately 130,000 people in Connecticut were tested for COVID, with 10,676 of them having Omicron infections. Previous variants of the coronavirus had infected roughly 6% to 8% of the population. People with past infections who received two doses of an mRNA vaccine were protected against Omicron, but no extra benefit was seen when they received a third booster dose.

A separate study from Canada, which was also published on medRxiv ahead of peer review, indicated that more than two vaccination doses may provide minimal protection against Omicron infection in previously infected people. The researchers believed that participants should receive two doses of the mRNA vaccine, regardless of whether they had prior infection or not. People who had no prior infection or who had prior infections and were at risk of life-threatening consequences should get a booster shot. (Reuters May 4, 2022)
