Delhi high court has questioned the centre and the state government regarding the steps taken to ensure continued education for orphaned children. In 2020, Justice Yashwant Varma issued a notice to all states that the education facility should be provided to all Covid orphans. This directive included children who lost one parent or both of them.

Now the court has asked the centre to direct the Union women and child development ministry to file an affidavit detailing all the information and steps taken by the government, including data from other ministries about the issue. Meanwhile, the Delhi government has been asked to file another affidavit briefing all the measures implemented independently in aided or government schools for the continued education program.

Earlier, the Delhi government informed the HC that the Mukhyamantri Covid-19 Aarthik Sahayata Yojana initiative has provided support and assistance to all the families that have suffered an untimely loss. According to the scheme, two assistance methods were made available i.e., Rs 2500 per month for families who have lost their bread-winner and one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 for people who have lost their family member.

Recently, the court heard a plea filed by minor children Yasmin and Ruben Kataria through their advocate seeking compensation or a scheme for families who have lost their family member to Covid 19 due to “oxygen deficiency in the hospital”.
