On Tuesday Muzaffarpur reported three more instances of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES), bringing the total number of cases to 32. Hypoglycemia has been diagnosed in all three youngsters. They were being treated at Muzaffarpur′s Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) and were out of danger.

Muzaffarpur reported a maximum of 20 cases. In total, two children have died and three are receiving AES treatment. More cases have been reported till May this year. In 2021, till May 5, only nine AES instances were recorded with no deaths. In total, 23 AES cases have been reported in 2020, with four deaths by the end of May. According to an official, AES instances typically begin at the end of May, but because of the severe heat in April, cases were being recorded earlier this year.

The special secretary of the health department Sanjay Kumar Singh said that though the number of cases was more, the best thing was that the children were being treated well, getting cured and returning home. He praised the intensive information, education and communication campaigns for better treatment results this year. (ET Healthworld, May 11, 2022)
